Maras & Moray ½ day

08:20 AM. We will start our tour, the first place to visit will be:

1.- MORAY: The archaeological remains of Moray are located 7 kilometers from Maras, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, 38 km northwest of Cusco. Moray is Quechua word and names a sector occupied by the peasant communities of Misminay and Kaccllarakay. The word Moray had something to do with the corn crop that was called Aymoray, or with the month of May, which is also called Aymoray, and also with the dehydrated potato that is Moraya or Moray. Finishing our visit to Moray we will continue our trip to Maras (Salineras).

2.- MARAS. It is a town located 48 km. northwest of the city of Cusco, 12 km from Urubamba and about 3028 meters above sea level, it was an important town during the viceroyalty (it was the main salt supplier of the southern sierra), as shown by the church and the houses that still conserve the shields of indigenous nobility in their facades. The houses are made of adobe, white walls with roofs and blue windows, the streets are made of stone and mud. In the lintels you can read inscribed in stone the date in which they were built, their owner or a shield or ornament.

3.- SALINERAS: These salt mines are also known as “salt mines”. They are formed by about 3000 small wells with an approximate area of ​​about 5 m². In times of drought these are filled with salt water that comes from a natural spring that is located above the wells, when the water evaporates the salt crystallizes. When the salt reaches about 10 cm in height from the floor it will be removed and then bagged in plastic bags and sent to the markets of the region; today that salt is being iodized by state standards. This salt, in addition to sodium chloride, has other minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and copper.
